In times of tribal warfare, prisoners of war were used as slaves, civilians of enemy tribes were stolen and used as slaves as well. There has always been slavery in human history, in all cultures.

I guess it might make sense for slave traders to pick physically most impressive Africans as slaves to sell since slaves were mostly used as manual laborers. Does that mean that most contemporary American blacks are descendants of a selective group of African people who were picked for their physical prowess, but not necessarily other attributes such as intelligence? I just had a thought watching the movie.
